Society:
  • In the reniasance the idea of portraying human perfection was accepted.
  • This was the kind of art that Michelangelo was creating.
  • His art was inspired by the Calssical Greeks and Romans.
Values:
  • keen appreciation for the nude form
  • had a love of male beauty, which attracted him both aesthetically and emotionally

Beliefs:


  • Saw art as developing from culture and inner inspiration
  • believed that nature was an enemy that had to be overcome
  • believed that every stone had a sculpture within it, and sculpting was chipping away all that was not part of the inner statue
